I woke. I dug under my pillow, having spotted the edge of my phone and checked the time. Nearly eight. I had become used to waking just a handful of minutes before my alarm and—just my luck—today had been no different. I put on a blue shirt from the stack on the shelf, straightening it out, getting a good look at myself in the mirror. I looked like somebody with something to prove. Like somebody with places to be and no free time in the day. Sunlight blinded me through the windows.

Downstairs, the girl with the long earrings shook her head importantly as I passed.

“You’ve had a very long night,” she commented flatly.

“Not so long,” I told her. “It’s Monday, anyway. Isn’t everybody slow on Mondays?”

“You’re so right. You’re so right.”

She smiled wide, showing me rows of brilliant teeth.
